Massage Therapy Following Breast Surgery
Post-operative massage therapy is a supportive approach to Registered Massage Therapy that may help address tension, swelling, restricted movement, and discomfort following breast surgery. Provided by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), treatment focuses on soft tissue assessment and therapeutic touch within the regulated scope of massage therapy in Ontario.
This service may be supportive after procedures such as:
Breast augmentation or reduction
Mastectomy or lumpectomy
Breast reconstruction
Scar tissue formation following surgery
Sessions are paced gently and guided by your comfort, healing stage, and medical guidance. The intention is not to “fix” or force change, but to support the body’s natural recovery process through careful, informed touch.
How Post-Operative Massage Therapy Can Support Recovery
Following breast surgery, the body may hold tension, protective guarding, altered sensation, or restricted movement in the chest, shoulders, neck, and upper back. Post-operative massage therapy may help support:
Soft tissue mobility in surrounding areas
Reduction of muscular tension and guarding
Improved awareness and connection to the body
Supportive care alongside medical recovery
All treatment is adapted to your stage of healing and any recommendations from your surgical or medical team.
A Gentle, Somatic-Informed Approach
My approach to post-operative massage therapy is somatic-informed, meaning sessions are attentive to pacing, sensation, and nervous system response. Touch is collaborative, consent-based, and responsive to your body’s cues.
Alongside my work as an RMT, I hold advanced training as a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP®). While this training is not a separate service it informs how I work with safety, sensitivity, and awareness of how surgery and medical experiences can impact the body.
What to Expect in a Session
Each session begins with a brief assessment and conversation about your healing stage, comfort, and goals. Treatment may focus on areas such as the chest, shoulders, neck, arms, and upper back, always within your comfort and clinical appropriateness.
While these sessions are hands-on RMT treatments billable to standard insurance, my approach is inherently trauma-informed, respecting your nervous system’s unique pacing during physical touch.
